SDN Pyrmont is a 38-place centre providing quality early childhood education and child care for children from birth to school age in central Sydney.

We are located in a picturesque historic building which housed Pyrmont Public School in the 1800s, and we’re lucky to share the building with Pyrmont Community Centre and an Out of School Hours Care service run by the City of Sydney. This gives our centre the wonderful and unique benefit of seeming like a small village, despite being in the city. Children see friends after ballet class or play with school-aged siblings in the afternoons.

Led by an experienced Centre Director who is a university-trained early childhood teacher, the SDN Pyrmont team includes a qualified cook who prepares all food on site daily, an experienced Centre Administrator, two university-trained early childhood teachers, three diploma-trained educators, and seven experienced certificate III-trained educators.

Our educational program is designed to support each child to explore and research their own interests so they are happy and fully engaged. You can learn more about our educational program here.

The NSW Department of Education has assessed SDN Pyrmont against the National Quality Standard, and our centre is rated as ‘Meeting the National Quality Standard’.
Our families say…
“Thank you so much to the team at Pyrmont. I could not ask for a better team of people. They really care for the children.”

“The staff are patient and my child is happy to come to school every day.”

Centre History

SDN Pyrmont History

The traditional owners of the land around Pyrmont are the Cadigal People of the Eora Nation, who named the point ‘Pirrama’ which means ‘rocking stone’. The area was named Pyrmont by John Macarthur in 1806 when it was noted that the natural water springs of the area looked like the German spa town of the same name.

SDN Pyrmont opened on 23 August 1993 in the old Pyrmont Public School (1884 -1933), a building designed in the Victorian Italianate style by the NSW Schools Architect.

Within the first year the children enjoyed a puppet show, a trip to the zoo and Powerhouse Museum, visits from Sydney firefighters and a mobile animal petting zoo, and the newly formed parent committee organised SDN Pyrmont’s first birthday party.

Since its beginnings, SDN Pyrmont has undergone many changes and has maintained and reflected a strong connection with the families of this vibrant and diverse community.
