Professional Learning Workshops
We have taken the best of what we’ve learned about supporting children from birth to five years and packaged it into practical workshops.
The workshop program includes offerings from the team at SDN Beranga, an Autism Early Years Demonstration Service that explore ways to support children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in education and care settings.

Review the essential components of communication and build on your knowledge of communication to discuss the practical strategies you can use to support children with ASD in your early childhood setting. Topics include:
- what is communication?
- how does communication affect every day interactions and routines?
- visual communication strategies
- chat boards, schedules, choice boards, transitioning, making requests
- using Key Word Sign and gestures using iPads and voice output devices

This workshop will explore ideas to make group times more engaging and interactive as well as some practical strategies to support children with ASD engage in group times. This will include what to consider when choosing group time activities, communication supports, the environment and sensory tools.

Part 1: This workshop is the first of two workshops exploring sensory processing in children with ASD. It will provide you with information on how children process sensory information and practical strategies for your early childhood setting.

Part 2: This workshop follows on from the first and allows you to explore the levels of arousal and alertness for children with ASD. It will provide you with information on how to support children depending on these levels, including the importance of understanding a child’s sensory profile and implementing a sensory diet.

Learn practical ways to support children with ASD to develop and extend their play and interaction skills. Explore ideas to support children with ASD engage in play and meaningful interactions in an early childhood setting. Look in depth at the steps involved in play and interaction and how to teach these steps to children with ASD. Discover the importance of your environment in supporting these skills and learn about resources like play schedules, prompting and modelling.

This workshop will provide you with ideas to effectively collaborate with families and external stakeholders to plan and program for children with ASD. This includes setting goals, facilitating IFSPs and IEPs and embedding this information into your programming. You will also be challenged to think outside the box and be creative in relation to designing exciting and stimulating experiences for children with ASD.

Gain an insight into children with ASD, how they approach the world and ways in which we can support them. Look at how behaviour is a method of communication, appropriate ways to prevent challenging behaviours and what you can do if someone has ‘flipped their lid’.

Explore what trauma informed practice is and how it compliments research based interventions for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). We will look at the short and long term effects of trauma for children, plus how our amazing brains have the ability to change and recover.
